Macramé (mak-'rema), a technique of decorative knotting employing simple basic knots to create a multitude of patterns. The term derives from an Arabic word for Braided fringe. It's first known use was recorded by Arabs in the 13th century. The craft became popular in America in the 1960's and is used for many different kinds of mediums besides just jewelry.
